Tyra Banks recently revealed her real hair on the season premiere. She went all natural or as Banks puts it, "no wigs, extensions, no nothing. It's just me coming straight out of the shower with wet hair". Her hairdresser's did her hair on the live TV show. The show revealed that often times wigs or weave are worn only for fashion diversity. There may be little or no relationship between people having little or no natural hair. Fake hair gives you the luxury of wearing many styles while providing a rest for the natural hair from perms, the elements and any other abusive things that are done to the female hair including heating appliances and hair sprays. Celebrities have aggressive schedules and often times must change their look speedily.
This segment of the Tyra show sparked a lot of conversation on the Internet, BLOGS and other Medias. A multitude of diverse comments have been left throughout those Medias. One comment in particular provided a URL to “Aaron Ranen's Black Hair Documentary” Video on You Tube. The video highlights that African Americans in particular spend billions each year on wigs, weave and hair products. African Americans only make up 10% of the American population but buy up to 70% of the wig and weave purchased in the United States. The documentary asks an interesting question; who controls the black hair industry? The answer is Koreans, who dominate the industry. Practically all of the ads in Korean magazines are in reference to blacks and their hair. The documentary revealed many other interesting facts.
In Southern California, ten years go there were around ‘20’ beauty supply stores, now there are over ‘100’. In essence 99.9% of the business at Korean ran beauty supply stores are African Americans. Koreans also control 80% of the beauty supplies that are distributed. They are now creating there own beauty lines and attempting to buy out all beauty supply stores owned by African Americans. It is evident that Koreans are slowly taking over the beauty product industry. There seems to be no revise of this trend in sight.
Kizure is a well known black husband and wife owned beauty supply company that has been in business for over 30 years. They are a distributor for black beauty suppliers and black hair stylists as will as Korean ran stores, but since Koreans are now manufacturing their own line of products they carry very few Kizure products and they are feeling the squeeze. As indicated in the documentary we have to look at saving and controlling the industry.
I think that it’s fantastic that Koreans or anyone can own or run a business, however, a company should not use its monopoly force to force another company out of business. The country as a whole should focus on ensuring that no one nationality or company has a complete monopoly. This is America, and the roots and foundation of our country should remain true to its origin. As a country we must strive to maintain a balance.
